O período de desmame dos leitões é uma fase bastante crítica, com muitos desafios ao animal ainda jovem e imaturo fisiologicamente, como mudança de ambiente e necessidade de se adaptar a uma dieta exclusivamente sólida, baseada em ingredientes vegetais, e não mais do leite oriundo da fêmea. Nesta fase também há muitos desafios sanitários, principalmente entéricos, pois a menor digestibilidade da dieta acaba proporcionando muito substrato para crescimento de bactérias patógenas, como a Escherichia coli. É ela, por sinal, a grande responsável pela incidência de diarreias durante esta fase, levando o animal a desidratação e perda de desempenho.
